Solving School Transportation Challenges with Stop Arm Extensions

Updated: Oct 13

Yellow school bus with stop sign extended on a tree-lined street, cars waiting behind. Sunny day, shadows on the pavement, calm atmosphere.

As parents, we do what we can to make sure our kids are safe, especially on their way to and from school. Like millions of families across the U.S., we rely on the school bus every day. In fact, over 24 million K–12 students take the bus in the U.S. each morning and afternoon (National Center for Education Statistics, 2022). It's a huge system, and most of us assume it's working the way it should.

One issue that impacts school bus stops across America - and doesn't get nearly enough attention - is illegal "drive-arounds," when cars ignore the stop sign on a school bus and speed past while children are trying to cross. It happens more often than you'd think, and it’s terrifying. Flashing lights and the traditional stop sign don’t always stop distracted or reckless drivers.

That’s where BusGates® steps in. These stop arm extensions attach right to existing stop signs on school buses and extend out 5 feet from the side of the bus with bright LED lights. Creating a physical barrier that makes it much harder for cars to ignore, it's a simple, affordable solution that could save lives.

Sometimes it’s the smart, straightforward fixes that make the biggest difference. We’ll always do everything we can to keep students safe so they can get to and from school every time.
