Installation Instructions

Thank you for installing patents pending BUSGATES® on your school buses! By fitting your school bus with a BUSGATES® extension, you have taken a major step to help reduce stop arm runners! Please use the install process below to ensure proper installation.

Installation Steps for Fiberglass Stop Arm Extension

Step 1

Open side panel on the school bus and disconnect power to the stop arm box. 

Step 2

Remove the 5/16 inch screws from the front and back of the stop arm box and take the cover off.

Step 3

Open stop arm manually.

Step 4

Take out the 4 plastic brackets. Place one bracket on the left end of the BUSGATES® extension (the side with the wires is the backside of the arm), mark the 2 holes in the bracket with a pencil. On the marks, using a 3/8 drill bit, drill the 2 marked holes. Take 2 of the plastic brackets and using 2 bolts, 4 washers and 2 nuts install the bracket to the arm (nuts should be facing the back of the arm).

PLEASE use a wrench/socket to ensure you don’t over tighten, air tools may crack the bracket.

Step 5

Measure light on the stop arm and add 1/4 inch (usually 5” lights). Measuring from the left bracket the distance of light plus 1/4 inch, mark the 2 holes in the bracket with a pencil. On the marks, using a 3/8 drill bit, drill  the 2 marked holes. Take 2 plastic brackets and using 2 bolts, 4 washers and 2 nuts install the bracket to the arm (nuts should be facing the back of the arm).

Using a clamp or holding in place, put the BUSGATES® on the stop arm centering the bracket around the stop arm light (brackets go on the outside on either side of the stop sign).  The top of the BUSGATES® arm should be resting on the bottom of the stop sign and arm should be level horizontally.  Mark the 4 drill holes with a pencil.  Remove the BUSGATES® arm and on the marks, using a 3/8 drill bit, drill the 4 marked holes.  Place the BUSGATES® back on the stop sign and using 4 bolts, 8 washers and 4 nuts install the brackets to the stop sign (nuts should be facing the back of the arm).

Step 7

Take the wire harness and route towards the lower part of the stop arm box. Push wires through the grommet on the bottom of the stop arm box. Using the heat shrink butt connectors (included), reds together and blacks together. Take wire that’s included and put red with red and black with black.

Step 8

Black wire to ground, (use the ground connector).

Step 9

Using “T” connector (included) and place on blue trip wire (if needs to flash, place on
       flasher wire) and connect red wire to the connector.

Step 10

Take excess wire and wrap inside stop arm box leaving some slack for the BUSGATES® arm to move from the stop arm box. 

Step 11

Place plastic tubing (included) over wires to keep together.

Step 12

Place cover back onto stop arm box and secure with 5/16 inch screws.

Step 13

Return power to stop arm box, stop arm should cradle itself.

Step 14

Start school bus and turn on master switch, activate 8 way yellows, open service door. Stop arm should deploy with BUSGATES® arm now illuminated!

You have now installed your BUSGATES® product that is created to protect the most precious cargo we deliver, our school children!!
