The new school year has officially begun! It’s an exciting time, AND also a critical moment to refocus on what matters most: our children’s safety.
School Bus Safety Tips Every Driver Should Know
When school is in session, streets and neighborhoods become high-traffic areas. As drivers, it’s our duty to stay alert, eliminate distractions, and follow the law.
Slow down in school zones.
Watch for children crossing the street
Never text or use your phone while driving
Always obey crossing guards and school zone signage
By staying cautious and aware, we can prevent accidents before they happen.
Respect the Bus – and the Law
School buses are designed to be one of the safest modes of transportation for students, but that safety depends on how drivers behave around them.
Here’s what every driver must remember:
Stop when a school bus extends its stop arm and flashes red lights
Never attempt to pass a bus from behind or from either direction when the stop arm is extended
Stay at least 10 feet back from the bus to allow children room to cross safely
These aren’t just guidelines, they’re laws in every state. Violating them can lead to fines, points on your license, or worse: irreversible harm to a child.
Stop Arm Extensions Are Making a Difference
To enhance visibility and reduce dangerous drive-arounds, school districts across the U.S. are updating their fleet with BusGates extended stop arms.
A Community Commitment
Student safety is a community-wide effort. Parents, guardians, neighbors, and drivers all play a part in setting the tone for a safe school year. By practicing these school bus safety tips every day, we can make sure every child arrives at school and back home safely.
